Victoria Tait speaks with Pene and Amitai Pati and Moses Mackay from Sol3 Mio about their music, career highlights and what to expect at their upcoming performance in Waipara this month. Sol3 Mio has been described as a group bridging the gap between classical and contemporary music. The two tenor brothers, Pene and Amitai Pati, and cousin Moses Mackay, have become world famous for their fresh and unique perspective on opera, which has, in turn, made the music more accessible to the masses. The singers have exploded onto the world’s music scene with their unbelievable talent and onstage presence that brings the audience back time and time again. At Christmas In The Vines, on December 17, Sol3 Mio will be joined on stage by Stan Walker and Hayley Westenra and will be accompanied by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, at Waipara Hills Winery. 3 NO. 13 HARCOURTS NEW ZEALAND 2012-2013

How do you describe your music? our music is definitely an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary music. of course, our primary discipline is opera/classical, so we try to mix old-school favourites in a way that respects both genres. our music is filled with our own personalities – you can hear the humour, you can hear the drama, you can hear the ‘sol3 mio-ness’ if you will... that’s what i think makes our music, ours. our music is nostalgic sentiment in a song, but also emotionally driven and powerfully stirring. – Pene Opera tends to be quite serious, yet Sol3 Mio is known for taking a more relaxed approach. Do you think this has made opera more accessible to a wider audience? Absolutely. this is the key to appealing to a ‘newer’ audience. People believe in a stereotype about opera being stand-offish, upper-class and for the chosen few, and that’s what stops them from having a taste. But classical music is in everyday life, through tV, movies and jingles – people just don’t know that. By taking opera and making people realise this, we instantly have access to this wider audience. opera has been going through the ages. why? Because it’s a movie in song format. we lose this appeal in today’s music. A relaxed approach on opera reassures the audience that this music can be for everyone. we invite everyone to our world and make them realise that this has been a part of their life too, they just didn’t know it. – Pene

“Our music is filled with our own personalities – you can hear the humour, you can hear the drama, you can hear the ‘Sol3 Mio-ness’ if you will...” – Pene Pati

What has been your career highlight? A career highlight has to be becoming an Adler Fellow with san Francisco opera – very privileged to be a part of such a prestigious programme and an amazing company. with sol3 mio, performing at Vector Arena, as it was always a goal that we wanted to achieve. it’s a blessing to be able to achieve what you set out to do, and it’s definitely a milestone that we will never forget. – Amitai What is your favourite Christmas carol, and why? my favourite carol will have to be Shepherd’s Pipe Carol. i sang this as a chorister with the Graduate Choir NZ, and it’s always been a carol i’ve enjoyed performing and listening to. listening to it also brings back some good memories of me and my brother trying to learn to read music and sing in time for the first time. Carol singing had a huge impact on our development as musicians. – Amitai Who is the biggest comedian of the group? i don’t classify myself as a comedian at all, and if i do crack a joke it’ll usually be for my own amusement, in which i will laugh over and over again! You’ll have to have the Pati boys fight for that title. – Moses Who inspires you? i always say that if you don’t want to do something because you’re nervous, scared, unconfident... then do it for someone who can’t. – Moses

Dancing Queen The world-renowned St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre is performing Swan Lake in Christchurch late December. Christine de Felice speaks to principal dancer Irina Kolesnikova, about her life as a professional ballerina.

Style | report

The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre (SPBT) was founded by Russian entrepreneur Konstantin Tachkin in 1994 and is recognised as one of the world’s leading classical ballet companies. The company specialises in performing the masterpieces of classical ballet loved by audiences across the globe. Giselle by Adolphe Adam; Don Quixote, La Bayadère and Paquita by Ludwig Minkus; Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The St. Petersburg Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty by Peter Tchaikovsky; and Les Sylphides (Chopiniana) and Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev – all these and more are included in their extensive repertoire. Since the company was founded it has toured extensively, visiting numerous cities across Europe, the United States, South Africa, Asia and Australia. These hard-working dancers present some 200-250 performances every year, and SPBT is

the only classical ballet company in the world that is completely independent of government financial aid or sponsor funding. The company performs in many of the world’s most famous theatres, such as the London Coliseum and Royal Albert Hall, the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, the Bunkamura Hall in Tokyo, the National Theatre in Taipei, and the National Theatre in Beijing. The 60 professional dancers in the company are all graduates of either the world-famous Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy or other significant ballet schools, while well-known former dancers are their ballet masters and mistresses. The jewel in the company’s crown is Irina Kolesnikova – her name alone means sold-out performances throughout the world, with ballet lovers and demanding dance critics alike enthralled by her talent.

18 Style | report

To become a prima ballerina requires many years of tuition and practice. What age were you when you started ballet, and where did you start learning? I entered ballet school at the Vaganova Institute when I was eight years old and graduated at 18, so 10 years of study – and not just ballet, we also had regular schoolwork to do: maths, history, etc. To become a leading dancer takes even longer. I danced for five years before reaching principal status, dancing every day, practising every day. Was the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre the first company you joined? Yes, I joined SPBT [in 1998] as I liked the idea of a company that specialised in full-length classical works. Have you been a member of any other ballet companies, or been a guest dancer at any other companies? I have danced in gala programmes in St. Petersburg, Moscow and London, but mainly I stay with my own company. What would a typical day be like for you? A typical day is: Sleep in for as long as I can. Then a class at the ballet studio for an hour and a half. Rehearsals to follow, then my big meal of the day – fish, salad, soup. I also nibble on nuts and seeds for energy. I don’t eat meat, don’t have desserts and I don’t drink. Is there anything you have to sacrifice for your ballet career? See the previous answer! What is your favourite ballet and role, and why? Swan Lake has to be it. It’s a challenging dual role: Odette – the soft, vulnerable Swan Queen, and then Odile – the cunning, flamboyant seductress. Two very different roles. They are both physically and emotionally demanding. Do you get nervous before a performance and if so, what do you do to calm your nerves? Yes, but in a good, positive way. Maybe I’d say more excited than nervous. I’m confident in my physical abilities; it’s the emotional side that brings the challenge as I stand in the wings waiting for my first entrance. It’s understood ballet shoes get worn out very quickly, so how many pairs do you go through in a month and how many pairs do you take on tour? It depends on the floor surface. A good stage lino prolongs the life

of a pair of pointe shoes. I use several pairs during a performance. Sometimes I prefer a pair that has been worn in; they can be softer on the toes! Sometimes I use a brand-new pair as they can give me a special feeling. Over the tour of six weeks, I’ll go through maybe 30 pairs. You tour extensively with the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre. Do you enjoy visiting and performing in different countries? Oh yes, it’s wonderful to dance to new audiences. Every country has a new way of reacting. Sometimes you hear no applause but can feel the emotion across the footlights. Other times it’s wild cheering and lots of curtain calls. Is this your first visit to New Zealand? No, I was here as a soloist about 15 years ago. Do you get the chance to go sightseeing in other countries, and if so what are some of your favourite places? I love London – who wouldn’t? We were there last year and had a wonderful season at the Coliseum Theatre. I danced nine performances in 12 days, so there was not much time for sightseeing. But I do love the history of the city, and Harrods! While in New Zealand, I hope I can visit the countryside on my days off – breathe the fresh air and enjoy the famous fresh food.

A promise of connection this 2016 Architectural Design Award-winning home was an exercise in redemption through creative cooperation. words DAvinA RichARDs

Style | home

Collaboration was key to designing an architectural home that replaced an existing house lost to the 2010/2011 earthquakes. Cymon Allfrey and don roy of Cymon Allfrey Architecture in Christchurch were the two creative minds behind the ‘Bradnor road’ home in fendalton, and were awarded the 2016 National residential New Home over 300sqm Architectural design Award and the residential interiors Architectural design Award. designed to accommodate a couple nearing retirement and pay homage to the owners’ love of mid-century modern architecture, the home needed to “expand functionally when grandchildren came over or they wanted to entertain,” Cymon says. There also needed to be a promise of connection between the house and its natural surroundings, and, just as importantly, a personal and emotional connection between the owner and house through the incorporation of loved qualities from the existing home. A sense of familiarity depicted through architectural language meant that the home has rooms “organised in a similar way”, and the grand living room orientates to the river.

An initial challenge posed by this project was that it was an insurance-related build. Cymon says,“There were the usual challenges of creating good architecture in an environment where a home was lost. This created obstacles in terms of size, location, scale and budget.” He adds that they wanted to make sure the house is as “visually honest as possible” and do so in a cost-effective way. The contemporary home sits on a tree-lined cul-de-sac adjacent to the Wairarapa Stream and its defining feature is the extensive structural timber skin distinguished from the road as one drives up to the house. “Timber became a narrative that was used throughout the design and construction – it has no structural steel... Architecturally, it’s about presenting itself to the road in a simple way that was recognised to be a home,” Cymon says. Volume has been created with high-level windows, and the sloping roof addresses the sun and river. mapped out on one level, the simple interior is split into three main sections and follows a practical L-shaped floor plan aligned to connect the primary living spaces to the northerly river view and existing garden to the east. The kitchen and the bathroom (which was a joint effort between Cymon Allfrey Architects and Christchurch designer davinia sutton) wrap along the eastern edge of the house and address a courtyard accommodating two bedrooms and en suite. The study, second bathroom, master suite and garage face the road along the south boundary.

The project was a “considered design process where creativity was deliberate” and exercised the architects’ creativity and skill, as well as the ability to work together, shared through a process of respect, encouragement and support. Built by Homes by maxim, Cymon describes the design as a “restorative process” and the design and build teams were engaged in the project and overcame obstacles together – the resulting views as you navigate through the house are a particular victory. Judges called the design an elegant project. “set between river and road, the building and landscape intentions are held in a sensitive balance.” The ‘Bradnor road’ home was one of two projects for which Cymon Allfrey Architects received an award. The other winning project, ‘Gleneagles Terrace’ by Craig south, is the creative and graceful design of two family homes and won the 2016 National residential multi-Unit dwelling Architectural design Award.

Love Your Lawn Landscape architect Craig Wilson looks at the options and benefits of artificial lawns.

Landscaping projects can generally be broken down into two distinct components: the ‘hardscape’ and the ‘softscape’. A key element of the ‘softscape’ in Canterbury residential gardens is the humble lawn. Our childhood memories of backyard cricket, making daisy chains and backyard summer picnics were all made possible by the green slab of lawn that Dad mowed every Saturday afternoon. For the landscape designer, a lawn is a valuable tool in creating a restful open space with strong contrast to the texture, layering and form of garden beds and the hard precise lines of built landscape elements. In summer, an expanse of a lawn is a welcome cooling element in sharp contrast with the reflection and glare of hard surfaces. The ideal lawn has been often viewed

as a weed-free ‘monocultural’ wonder and is often the pride of its watchful owner. However, the effort to create this impression is not for the faint-hearted and requires a strict year-round schedule of irrigation, fertilisation, spraying, de-thatching and mowing. If you want the look but don’t want the work, a viable alternative to a traditional ‘browntop and fescue’ lawn is one of the many artificial turf products available. The term ‘artificial’ never sounds good and is enough to put many off. However, it is increasingly becoming the lawn of choice – even here in ‘lawn proud’ Canterbury. The benefits of artificial turf are obvious, but worth the time to mention. Firstly, you don’t need to mow it much… and secondly, it looks as good all year as the day it went down. For the homeowner

who travels and wants to come home to pristine lush green without the thought of mowing ankle-length lawn, it can be a no-brainer. It can also be a great solution to that problematic shady area where you’ve tried and tried unsuccessfully to get a lawn to establish and ended up with mud time and time again. Perhaps most importantly, as our water supply and consumption continues to gain deservedly heightened awareness, artificial turf requires no irrigation and will be a lovely, soft green even in the harshest drought. Artificial turf will never be everyone’s cup of tea, and it’s hard to beat the feeling of a healthy dense green swathe of grass between your toes on a summer’s day. But be aware of ‘lawn envy’ this summer – your neighbours’ lawn may not be all you imagined it to be.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS with Tim Goom

GARDENING TRENDS Quality landscape architecture weathers the nature of evolving fashions and tastes- however it is interesting to examine trends which emerge from year to year. Some of the trends seen in landscaping this year internationally: • • • • • • •

Ground covers

Sustainable garden landscaping practices clever recycling of grey and rain water The use of native and drought resistant plants Low maintenance landscaping Plant walls and roof tops gardens Firepits and fireplaces Edible gardens Movable gardens

Ground covers such as pachysandra and aceana are an attractive and functional way of covering up unsightly dirt which would otherwise host weeds, whilst creating an interesting texture. Once established, ground cover plantings are easily maintained. Space shortage

We have observed many of these trends in our projects locally, we have also seen additional trends emerging, specific to our locality. Colour 2016 has seen a revived interest in the use of colour through the use of flowers (bulbs and perennials) and contrasting coloured leafy plantings. The impact of changing colour adds variety and a sense of your garden being a living, ever changing entity. Hedging Some gardeners approach hedges warily, due to the perception of hedging requiring time consuming maintenance and being ‘traditional’. However, the maintenance required is determined by the variety of hedging chosen. A variety such as teucrium will require trimming almost as soon as you have hung up your hedge clippers, but slow growing varieties such as buxus will only require a couple of trims a year. Hedging need not be boring-you can have flowering, scented, soft or spiky hedges and is a great way to add structure. Using trees for shelter (from both the sun and our pesky prevailing Easterly) will provide a protected cosy environment. Evergreen Perenials Plugging gaps in your beds with evergreen perennials will provide a show for most of the year, keeping your garden visually interesting. New forms of Salvia, such as ‘love & wishes’, flowers for up to 9 months of the year!

There is a move towards smaller sections and larger dwellings in urban areas, reducing the available space for outdoor living. These space limitations are encouraging gardeners to look to new ways to efficiently maximise the outdoor space they have. Gardening upwards (through the use of garden walls) and movable planted pots are some options. Cleverly combining varieties of plants along borders (rather than using the same variety) will create the illusion of more space whilst generating a lush outlook. Multiple purpose gardens We are seeing a trend towards gardens which are more than ornamental. Picking gardens are back in vogue. To maintain these year-round requires careful plant selection- a mixture of seasonal varieties (bulbs for spring and perennials for summer) to ensure that picked will soon be replaced. We New Zealanders have always had a love of our edible gardens- we have noted an increased demand for citrus trees such as kumquat and limequat which are hardier in our sometimes punishing climate. Vegetables and herbs are being incorporated in to the traditional bed alongside non edible plants. Planting bee and bug attractors is crucial to developing a biodiverse garden which supports itself. Water wise We are seeing gardeners becoming focused on rising temperatures and water preservation in their planting selections. Mulching provides a simple and effective way of retaining moisture and limiting weed growth. Some are opting out of lawns in favour of artificial turf or no mow plant options, reducing maintenance and limiting onerous irrigation required to keep a lawn green through summer. CHRISTMAS IDEAS WORDS DAvInA RICHARDS

Whether you intend to have your Christmas feast and festivities by the beach, at your holiday home or in the back garden, here are a few ideas to pull off a memorable experience as warmer weather invites us into the outdoors.

CREATIvE ACCEnTS Large outdoor spaces mean you can create an elaborate Christmas setting or a warm and cosy backyard. A decorative chandelier wreath hung from a tree branch over the dining table works well as a centrepiece, and smaller branches can be decorated with hanging flowers, baubles, paper lanterns or voile curtains for a soft and luxurious look. For something different, style a vintage fireplace surround and place it thoughtfully against an exterior wall; add a large flower display on top coupled with towering candle holders and various Christmas ornaments and decorations, such as pine cones and antlers to finish it off. Display balloons and float a herd of candles in the pool to create ambience and reflection.

30 STYLE | home

Go BoHEMIAn Christmas teepees are a creative alternative to gazebos and marquees. Think Christmas-themed cushions and throws, string lights, sheepskin rugs and a display of Christmas gifts. To complete the look, hang Christmas stockings on either side of the teepee entrance, illuminated Christmas words, a teepee-topper and a Christmas tree. Teepees will make your back garden feel like a world away, as well as creating a unique dinner ensemble and quirky backdrop for fun Christmas photos. CoSy nook A wooden bench or corner seat can be turned into an inviting and mesmerising nook on your patio, porch, balcony or entranceway. Hang a Christmas wreath from the porch ceiling and throw in some festive cushions, pillows and throws, lighting, Christmas decorations and a table for food and drink, and you have yourself one cosy corner to relax in and enjoy. STARRy nIGHT Enhance your natural surroundings using garland lights, lanterns and candles. Wrap string lights around tree trunks and branches or hang loosely under the tree so that it drapes slightly for an enchanting feel. A room divider with vertical string lighting creates a magical backdrop behind sofas and chairs, while a string light tent creates impact. Illuminated letters which spell out words, such as 'Joy' or 'Ho ho ho' can be used to decorate walls or hang between poles or from a tree branch.

Decorate your designated cinema space with soft furnishings, tables, lighting, Christmas ornaments and food and drink. EClECTIC fEEl For a low-key, lounge-look Christmas dinner party, opt for low tables with mismatched blankets, rugs and oversized floor cushions. This creates a fun and casual dinner setting which can be recreated in any environment. TABlESCApE Bring the Christmas dining experience together with little details at the table: include personalised décor such as blackboard signs with Christmas messages and pine cones as name card holders. Fill the air with a Christmas-scented candle, hang mistletoe, use twine to wrap cinnamon sticks and greenery to napkins, add a couple of miniature Christmas trees and deluxe Christmas crackers, and all that’s left to do is enjoy.

LYNETTE MCFADDEN GOLD BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

Recently I took the opportunity to go through an open home of a neighbouring property; in fact, from that property you can look directly into ours. The home in question was stunning, both spacious and beautifully presented. The consultants hosting the open home were absolute professionals and although the words ‘nosy’ and ‘neighbour’ never came up, in less polished hands, they may have. And that’s the little bee in my bonnet, so to speak. Real estate consultants and owners will often categorise neighbours viewing their homes as ‘sticky-beaks’, or worse, and it’s something I frequently challenge. Yes, for some folk it will absolutely be an exercise they go through for purposes other than making a purchase, but for others – and I’ve been in this camp many times – it can mean a potential sale. It makes sense

that neighbours buy next-door properties; they buy for themselves, for family members and on behalf of friends keen to get into a specific area or school zone. They believe in the location and its merits, and can at times pay a premium for the privilege. So, all is not lost if you see lists of locals on your open home attendance sheets. Accept it as just another part of the selling process. Breathe deeply and move on. Here’s another ‘B’ or two: BE Persistent and BE Sensible. In a transitional market, and that’s what I believe our current market is, as demonstrated by the incredible number of properties that are currently available (others refer to it as stock, a word I hate), versus a selective number of purchasers, many of whom won’t be rushed. Choice brings its own set of challenges, especially for owners. It’s time to be sensible with price expectations if you sit outside the market’s ‘sweet spot’, which can adjust almost weekly, or if your suburb is over-supplied, and there are several

pockets where this is the case. So whilst I’m advocating an optimistic yet realistic stance for owners, my message to sales consultants is one of persistence. Showing persistence is such a gutsy stance and all of us like to feel that the person working for us has done absolutely everything they possibly can to bring about the desired result. These actions should include a written marketing plan across multiple media, a structured open day schedule, data base contact, auction or private treaty, and then successful negotiation. The list is extensive and the work ethic needed is strong. And let’s not forget that professional approach when dealing with neighbours; after all, you never know, they just might purchase.

JOINING THe DOTS in Cashel Mall Richard Dalman looks at the progress of this favoured shopping strip. PHOTOGrAPHY Charlie JaCkson

In November, the first retail stores – Mecca Maxima, Superette, Glassons and Hallensteins – opened in the ANZ Centre. Cashel Street was abuzz with people waiting for the doors to open and opening-day specials to be enjoyed. This once quiet side of Colombo Street now gives city-goers reasons to venture further down Cashel Mall. The ANZ Centre is located in a critical and unique part of the CBD. It fronts four key streets – Cashel, High, Colombo, and Hereford – and is positioned on one of the two diagonals that interrupt the Christchurch grid street pattern. This interruption creates the potential for interesting buildings and spaces. The ANZ Centre achieves this with its curvaceous glass façade and the soon-to-open glass atrium on the High Street side. Hopefully, it will also relate positively to the triangular space immediately to the north.

Cashel Mall is a destination shopping strip, in which Ballantynes has held the fort since the earthquakes. Ballantynes is the anchor I believe Christchurch should be grateful decided to stay. Our city owes much to the business’ ongoing determination and loyalty. The innovative Re:STArT Mall has been another very successful mainstay that continues to delight tourists and locals alike. With the CBD spaces starting to fill there is a “joining of the dots” occurring. Ballantynes and the ANZ Centre will soon be joined by BNZ, The Terraces and The Crossing developments. The stage is set for increased retail activity in between, and soon there will be more buildings than gaps in this area. A feeling of integration, wholeness and style is achieved as more building developments progress. Not only is retail starting to return to the CBD, but so, too, are the commercial tenancies bringing

more people to the centre every day. It is good to see the place pumping with people. Our architecture practice was in the inner city prior to the earthquakes, and one of the things I have missed was the opportunity to bump into friends and colleagues on the street. A lot of business is done through such informal meetings, and much of that has been lost. With the CBD starting to function again, the heart of the city promises to be a vibrant, inspiring destination.

A feeling of integration, wholeness and style is achieved as more building developments progress.

THE SECrET SANdS of Sanya Kate Preece explores the Chinese island on which sun, sand, surf and steamboats are the orders of the day. PHoToS Kate PreeCe A three-course meal, a few movies, a glass or two of red, and a small travel group touched down in Guangzhou, China, 12 hours after leaving Christchurch. The flight was care of China Southern Airlines, the service was enjoyable, and the seat lay flat – if you were lucky enough to find yourself in business class. We weren't staying in China’s third largest city, however, bound instead for the whitesand beaches of Sanya, on Hainan Island, a quick 90-minute flight away. For the in-flight snack, leave your European preferences at home. Expect a Chinese hamburger (sticky rice of white and purple wrapped around some form of meat) and a juice box of sweet herbal tea. If you can’t deal with this deviation in cuisine, best turn back now. Flying into Hainan Island, the references to the ‘Hawaii of China’ are believable. Mountainous green-covered hills give way to deep valleys, with ribbon-like river that glisten from above. The popular city of Sanya unfurls before us. It is a destination for a luxurious retreat, and we were to stay at what was China’s first resort. We arrived at the MGM Grand –

previously Gloria Resort – and were greeted with lei-like flowers and a glass of the best coconut milk I have ever tasted. We were quick to immerse ourselves in resort life: swimming, sunbathing and ordering from the bar in bikinis. (Note: the Chinese are not as accustomed to the Kiwi holidaymakers’ penchant for a 5pm drink, and might need guidance to make cocktails and G&Ts.) After tourism, agriculture is the second biggest industry on Hainan Island and produce year-round fruit for the mainland. Crops include pineapple, bananas and mango (in two varieties, one of which is from seed imported from Australia), which flourish in the average temperature of 25°C. The bird’s eye view from the plane highlighted this clearly with lines of cultivated fields creating patterns on the hills. Today’s food in Sanya is worthy of a long lunch. Juice can come straight from a gigantic green coconut, extracted from corn (served hot) or squeezed fresh from a cactus (bright purple). Meat is served whole – fish in particular, but it is not uncommon for a chicken’s head to sit on a plate either. The dumplings couldn’t be better, and neither could the fried rice, and this is a country in

which you will line up to eat your oh-so-flavoursome greens. Spice fiends will also be satisfied, with the hot stuff part of the everyday menu (watch out for the yellow chilli sauce!). To experience something off the beaten track, seek out a fishing village. We arrived at one not long before sunset and joined a raft of boats making their way inland after a day’s fishing – and more so heading back out, fully equipped with rows of squid lights hanging high above the cabins. Workers who don’t own their own restaurant take their hauls directly to the fish markets, but the rest are waiting for patrons to choose their fish du jour. For us, it was swallow fish, a beautifully soft white fish that melted in the mouth after being boiled in stock on a burner atop our table. This form of ‘steamboat’ or ‘hot pot’ is classic Chinese fare, and the go-to option if you are to experience any Chinese barbecue. With four days in Sanya, we experienced little more than a taste for this tropical oasis. A short trip through one of the shopping areas brought us head-to-head with the locals, yet for those wishing for a resort-style retreat, choose from 43 international brands and there’s no doubt you will find solace.

Eating fresh fruit from the markets is a must, particularly the mangos and coconut.

Connecting Christchurch to China and the World. Up to 5 non-stop flights per week.

Fishing villages show a different side of life in Sanya.

1. drink like a Chinese pilot and opt for a half-and-half mix of orange and tomato juice, with a splash of hot sauce. Not only is it supposed to be good for the skin, but it adds an extra boost of vitamin C, ahead of any regular old juice. 3. To prevent jetlag, resist the urge to put your sunglasses on until 48 hours after a long-haul flight. Don’t stop natural light reaching your retinas – it will mess with your head. 4. Watch for surcharges. VAT might be 10%, but then there’s the 6% extra for the pool boy to deliver your drink. 5. Tea is king in China. Therefore, there will be some areas (such as Sanya) in which you will struggle to find a decent coffee – your best bet will be McDonald’s. If in doubt, hold off on the milk, too. It’s often UHT. 6. don’t take your power banks in your carry-on. You are likely to lose these ‘unsuitable items’ at the security check in Guangzhou. 7. dreamliner is more than just a catchy name. The China Southern Airlines flight, direct from Christchurch to Guangzhou, uses this type of plane (also known as a Boeing 787) and its fancy air-filtration system makes the in-flight conditions friendlier on your skin.

Optimal Optima Korea’s Kia Optima battles away in the shrinking sedan market, as motoring expert Ross Kiddie writes.

Elegance, style and performance don’t always go hand-in-hand in motor vehicle manufacture. But Korea’s Kia Corporation has certainly done that with the new midto-large sedan, the Optima. Well, when i say new, the Optima is mostly all new, it has a new chassis and it is bigger than before, but it looks little different, it still has the same sleek body style, and the latest iteration builds on those values i’ve just mentioned. The Optima reeks of flair and fashion, it sits low and it has a body style that oozes desire, that element is also carried over to the interior, the entire car has had a refresh with a renewed emphasis on quality trim and materials. there is little difference in price either, in fact it could well be cheaper than the outgoing model depending on specification. Limited specification comes in at

$48,990; for that money the Optima comes well specced, major features include satellite navigation, radar cruise control, full leather trim with heated front seats with electric seat adjustment, heated steering wheel and paddle shift gearbox. it’s fair to say, though, the evaluation car was top spec, an EX variant sits $3200 below that and it would probably be my choice given it doesn’t miss out on much and it has cloth trim, which is my preference. all that aside, both variants get a 2.4-litre petrol engine. it’s not a new unit, but i wouldn’t be at all surprised if it has had a bit of a makeover in terms of refinement, such is the quiet and sophisticated way the Optima drives – the engine is a major part of the hushed way in which the car travels. and as i eluded to in my introduction, the Optima isn’t short on performance.

the specs price: Kia Optima Ltd, $48,990 DimensiOns: Length, 4855mm; width, 1860mm; height, 1465mm cOnfiguratiOn: Four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive, 2359cc, 138kW, 241Nm, six-speed automatic. perfOrmance: 0-100km/h, 8.8sec fuel usage: 8.3l/100km

Rated at 138kW and 241Nm, the twin-camshaft, 16-valve unit has plenty of urge. it drives through the low and close ratios of a six-speed automatic gearbox, together the driveline promotes swift acceleration and easy momentum when it reaches the driver’s desired speed. it’s hard to detect how hard the engine is working, for a big block fourcylinder it is uncannily subdued, and even under acceleration sound is well isolated from the cabin. Unfortunately, my testing time was cut a little short, an engine maintenance warning light flicked up on the dash during the time the test car was in my care, so i was very circumspect as to how i drove the car, and how far. that aside, the engine has a lot of usable torque through the mid range, which means it is happy slugging it out in the areas where fuel use is minimised. Kia claims an 8.3-litre per 100km (34mpg) combined cycle average for the Optima and that figure is quite realistic, during my time with the test car the fuel usage readout was constantly listing around 9l/100km (31mpg) along with a 6l/100km (47mpg) figure available

instantaneously at 100km/h (engine speed 1700rpm). the Optima cruises beautifully, it has a plush ride and sound is deadened. Kia has utilised a fully independent, front stunt/rear multiple link set-up. i like these arrangements, the rear wheels have freedom, and springs and shocks are allowed to do their job unimpeded. mid-corner bumps are dealt to without deviation off-line, while at the other end steerage is direct and turn-in is accurate. Riding on high-quality michelin pilot rubber (235/45 x 18in), the sport specification tyres have strong grip properties along with little sound. they are also partly responsible for the strong steering feel, the driver is fully involved with the handling process. Creating a new car and building on the success of its predecessor is a complicated and difficult process, but Kia has always done that well, and the Optima is a good example of how sophisticated the modern sedan has come to be. it’s just a pity the sedan market in languishing in an age where a buyer’s first choice is generally a sport utility vehicle. Good cars like the Optima deserve to do better.

Couldn’t you just take it home.

THE ART OF A GARDEN

Can gardening be defined as art? Anne Hudson explores this concept and takes us on a tour of Flaxmere, Penny Zino’s garden in North Canterbury. Penny Zino had a vision. She wanted to create something of beauty that complimented the surrounding landscape, blending in with the form of the North Canterbury hills, river and terraces. There is no doubt Flaxmere is a work of art, but this artist had to truly understand how it would form over time. How will the plants grow? What will they look like in different seasons, and in their juvenile and mature states? What will the weather do to them? Is there enough water or shelter for them to grow? The painter can dab his or her colour onto the canvas and there it is, they do not have to wait and see how it might develop over time. The garden artist must see into the future and take risks with the elements. This is art in the environment. Flaxmere is a mature garden with a Japanese bridge crossing over ponds covered in lily pads. One wonders, was she inspired by Monet’s paintings? In another part of the garden, a swampy area has been planted with New Zealand beech trees and other native plants, reminiscent of a mountain walk. The variety of beech trees is

testament to Penny’s botanical knowledge. Each visit provides some new design. A playful swirl of tussock grass draws the eye down from a formal lawn into the native area, and pathways gently lead you to new vistas. Floral beds and neat edges give way to paths and loose planting. A rose garden and pool offer a formal layout, and from here the eye pans to a theatrical view of the mountains framed by poplars and a lovely wooden gate, beyond which a mown path leads into the field and almost to infinity. It is these vistas that have earned Penny her artist status and her work recognition as a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. A recent visit to the Netherlands to study with the renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf has been the inspiration for a new area of mixed grasses and annuals. They grow to a height of about 1m, offering an expanse of varied colour and texture. Penny continues to try out new ideas and new plants in this North Canterbury environment. Penny has designed and constructed much

of this garden herself. Its structure and layout, the perfectly created vistas and wandering water features, plus the stonework and planting, point to the work of an artist – but can we describe the garden as a work of art? A garden is a strong metaphor of change and flux. Each time one enters the garden it is different, dictated by those elements that affect all life forms. This garden is no exception, and provides a constant reminder to us that life has a cycle; that renewal and death are part of all life cycles. We learn to understand our place in the natural world by taking a walk in this beautiful landscape. The sublime, the romantic, the benign and the poisonous all co-exist within this work of art – one which works conceptually as well as formally. Flaxmere is open by appointment to the public and is available for garden tours, weddings and events. Each year, at the end of October, Art in a Garden is held at Flaxmere, showcasing not only the beautiful garden but also sculpture, painting, ceramics, glass, and jewellery, providing us with an opportunity to immerse ourselves in aesthetic pleasure.

fashion news Men’s designeR bag edit For Spring 2017, Louis Vuitton has taken men’s bags on a storybook safari. For most large brands, men’s bags are something of an afterthought. If a satchel or tote design works well in the women’s line, it gets simplified, enlarged and made more neutral in order to appeal to men. Louis Vuitton puts more thought and detail into its men’s bags than most other premier designer brands combined, and it really showed on the Spring 2017 runway in Paris earlier this year. The bags had a safari feel to them and the collection’s main colour story was blue, which made the whole thing feel like a highly stylised storybook adventure.

say goodbye to Cleavage It’s the end of an era for the cleavage according to Vogue (December issue). The trend of enhancing one’s assets has been around for centuries, however, fashion is taking a step back from bust boosting. Vogue contributor Kathleen Baird-Murray says, “The cleavage – those magnificent mounds pushed together to display sexual empowerment, to seduce, to inspire lust or even just to show off – is over, or at least, taking a well-earned break.” She adds, “The t*** will not be out for the lads. Or for anyone else, for that matter.”

How To STreSS LeSS

Elly McGuinness gives us some tip on keeping stress in check over the ‘silly season’. The lead-up to Christmas can be a very busy time for many – social get-togethers are on offer for every club, hobby, workplace, and circle of friends that we are involved in. At the same time, most people are still working full-time hours during this pre-Christmas period, shopping for gifts for loved ones, and planning upcoming holidays away. Many people will perceive the added jobs they need to do as quite stressful and overwhelming, and this can have repercussions for the health of the body. The implications of high levels of stress can be wide-reaching from headaches to skin conditions, increased blood pressure, problems sleeping, fatigue and a decreased ability to burn fat, to name a few.

Top Tips To keep STreSS in cHeck 1. MiniMise alcohol consuMption It’s a social time of the year when alcohol consumption increases for many. Be aware that alcohol creates more stress inside the body by making internal organs and systems work harder and can result in a restless sleep. If you choose to drink alcohol, be very mindful of how much and how often, and ensure you drink sufficient extra water to keep your body hydrated. The Ministry of Health recommends no more than two standard drinks a day for women and no more than three for men as well as at least two alcohol-free days every week. Bear in mind these are upper limits, and not guidelines for optimal health.

2. Breathe into your Belly Stressed people will generally breathe in and out of the top part of the chest, which can add to the stress response of the body. ‘Belly breathing’ is an effective way to decrease the stress hormones circulating in the body. It will also stimulate the lymphatic system, which assists in toxin and fluid removal from the body. To practice belly breathing, sit comfortably, place one hand on your belly and the other on your chest, and close your eyes. As you take a long, slow breath in, you should first feel the hand on your belly rise as your tummy fills with air. Towards the end of the in-breath, you will feel the hand on our chest rise as air fills this space. Then slowly release the breath and feel both hands lower back in. Start with 5-10 belly breaths every day, and gradually it should become the natural way for you to breathe. Anytime you feel your stress levels rising, take a few deep belly breaths. The tension in your body and your stress hormone levels should start to lower immediately. 3. say “no” Consider the things that are critical to maintaining optimal health, such as exercise, eating plenty of whole foods, good-quality sleep and spending time with loved ones. If the number of activities and tasks on your ‘todo’ list is negatively impacting on these areas, decide what you can say ‘no’ to and offer time to yourself, to care for your wellbeing instead.

Charmed at Chalmers Davina Richards experiences the feel-good factor of this local working men’s club. PHOTOGRAPHY Charlie JaCkson It was the first time I had ever stepped inside the Hornby Working Men’s Club & MSA and I had never really known what goes on behind those doors. It turns out that there’s plenty to get involved in, and the volume of members says it all. The Hornby Working Men’s Club is located at the The Hub Hornby and has been established for more than 60 years, boasting more than 7000 members. At its inception in 1956 it was a men’s-only club, but the decision was made to allow women to become members in 1982. My fiancé and I met the club treasurer, Brian Purcell, who was kind enough to show us around the building, which proved to be very accommodating with a wide range of excellent facilities, including a club café, club bar with a stage for live music and dance floor, sports hall, modern

gaming room, well-equipped gymnasium, TAB, meeting room, Chalmers restaurant and three function rooms to host weddings, birthdays and conferences. Shortly after our tour, we were introduced to Brian’s wife Raelene and enjoyed a drink before entering Chalmers Restaurant – which was filling up quickly. The menu was simple and consisted of hearty traditional fare, such as catch of the day, 250g rib-eye steak and a carvery with your choice of favourites, like pork, beef, lamb or chicken. Greeted with a friendly smile and a professional demeanour by the staff, I ordered the seafood cocktail followed by a main meal of marinated pork spare ribs coated in tangy barbecue sauce served with salad and fries – a favourite dish at the club, so I’m told. On its arrival I was pleasantly

surprised with the portion. The pork was succulent and came off the bone easily and a lashing of barbecue sauce was perfect. My fiancé tucked into the blue cod served with chips and salad and was content with his perfect flaky fish and its crispy outer coating. Despite being too full to indulge in a dessert, I didn’t hesitate to have a couple of spoonfuls of my fiancé’s carrot cake with frosting and vanilla ice cream, which was almost life-changing. Suffice to say, I immediately regretted not having one. If you have never stepped foot inside the WMC it’s worth popping in to take advantage of its many offerings. There is a distinct sense of community, friendship and fun that fills the entire venue, and for a small membership fee you, too, can be a part of this feel-good club.

flAIR for flavour a city favourite, Trevinos continues to satisfy with its recipe for success.

WORDS Davina richarDs PHOTOGRAPHY charlie Jackson Trevinos Restaurant and Bar is a popular contemporary venue nestled in Riccarton and but a hop, skip and a jump from Hagley Park. On the scene since 2000, it offers a choice of al-fresco dining in a cosy courtyard complete with gas fire, or indoor casual dining in the large bar area. When we entered the venue the crowd had created a lively atmosphere, and going by the clinking sound of plates from the kitchen, the staff were busy, but there was no indication of stress – just smiles and good service. The friendly waitress placed my fiancé and I in one of the seating booths and we ordered a pint of Steinlager and a glass of Mac’s cranberry, ginger and cinnamon as we perused the extensive menu. It offers everything from entrées and starters through to pizza, pasta, meat

and seafood dishes, and an excellent wine list covering a mixture of Kiwi and Aussie beverages. As a restaurant renowned for specialising in Mediterranean food, it seemed appropriate for at least one of us to order a seafood meal. A glance to the specials board took the interest of my fiancé who immediately confirmed his choice for the 100g West Coast whitebait with garden salad and pommes frites. I opted for the garlic and paprika spicerubbed pork cutlet with apple and red cabbage slaw and kumara chips. Tucking in, we were delighted. A generous portion of whitebait scored points, while the perfectly cooked pork chops had just the right amount of spice and balanced nicely with the sweet

kumara. As we dined, I noticed the attentive staff served drinks and food as quickly as they removed empty plates and glasses. We couldn’t leave without ordering the dessert special: New York baked vanilla cheesecake with ice cream and crème brûlée with pistachio biscotti and vanilla ice cream – a taste sensation and a great choice for those who want to indulge in a bit of naughtiness. Trevinos has been around long enough to know exactly what customers want and, with its combination of delicious food, professional service and ability to cater to different groups, whether it’s for a casual coffee, catch up with work colleagues or family gatherings, it’s no wonder people flock here.

Stunningly dressed women – along with a few impeccably attired men – celebrated the second Friends of Starship Christchurch Diamonds and Stars Tea Party. A beautiful marquee, on the Iris Lawn at Mona Vale, provided the perfect setting for the charity event. Christchurch society rose to the occasion to benefit the Starship Air Ambulance and the children of New Zealand as flutes of Moët Champagne flowed and an exquisite high tea was enjoyed. The clink of glassware blended with the noise of the lively auction, painting a picture of jollity, with a serious purpose. Guests enjoyed a splendid afternoon, and left blessed with the joy of giving.

As the sun set over New Brighton on Guy Fawkes night, a chilly sea breeze nipped at faces and fingers. Treetech, though, had the perfect solution to the weather. The company, which was celebrating two decades of tree care, threw a waterfront party along with a massive display of aerial fireworks. Within the cosy marquee commanding the beach, guests enjoyed fancy fare until the countdown began. On cue, the first of many projectiles lit the sky with a thunderous report and shower of fiery jewels choreographed to the music of David Bowie, to whom the event paid tribute. Just stunning!

high street Lane’s house oF traveL opening The late afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on Christchurch, sending waves of light to pervade the city and dance off the windows of the House of Travel standing proudly in St Asaph Street. The celebration within progressed convivially, guests mingling in the impending twilight as well as their host’s generosity. On every floor small groups were given conducted tours and chatted with staff, distracted frequently by the trays of delights handed around. As well as those of the edible and drinkable varieties, there were other temptations from which to choose, namely those of faraway destinations, to which House of Travel will happily send you. There could not be a better way to enhance summer than by bringing the best to Christchurch and that is just what Harcourts Gold did in staging a fundraising fashion show with Dame Trelise Cooper. Holding the party spellbound, Dame Trelise spoke of her work in relation to Women’s Refuge, the charity benefiting from the evening. The event then stepped up into high gear as the first model appeared, leading the parade in a winding progress through the gathering, each garment receiving great applause. Surrounded by the wonder machines of yesteryear, the latest achievements in the property industry were recognised and celebrated. Companies and individuals who have displayed exceptional performance and dedication, were in the limelight when the Property Council New Zealand held the Southern Excellence Awards 2016 at the Air Force Museum. Tables sparkled in the candlelight as dinner progressed and, in between courses, guests were able to relax at the various pampering stations arranged about the hall. Following the handing out of awards and the possibility of drowning in the provided luxuries, it was time to dance the night away. Such fun!

RiccaRton Races The gentle rain fell from the leaden sky and hung like a necklace of liquid jewels from the leafy boughs, beneath which picnics were laid out. The soggy lawn of Riccarton Park was no deterrent to the company of dedicated race-goers who, despite the inclement conditions, were determined to enjoy the day. Fashions of every style and degree of coverage, wafted by in a casual parade of elegance and frequent shivery gooseflesh. The background tumult of voices, which included whoops of victory and slurred commiseration resulting from the fickleness of betting, blended with the drumming of hooves on turf to play out the symphony of race day.

tRotting cup Day at aDDington

Simon Granger, Nick Wheeler

A human tidal wave flowed through the gates at Addington and the air of excitement climbed skyward. Hands secured hats on heads and held hemlines in place against the strengthening breeze as out on the track horses and drivers made ready. Eyes were challenged as itinerant fashion plates vied with the gallant chargers for attention. Sulkies hurtled past drawn by the magnificent snorting power generators strapped on. By the day’s end, some would be celebrating whilst others would tear up unproductive betting tickets, victims of fickle fortune. Sunburnt, windblown, poorer in pocket but richer in enjoyment, the tide turned and ebbed homeward.

The STyle guide To Christmas Day etiquette Presents: when to open them and how to pretend you like them. WOrDs ViCToRiA TAiT if you are one of those families that opens presents before breakfast on Christmas Day, all we have to say is... shame on you. By traditional standards, it’s considered rather uncouth. sorry, we didn’t make the rules, it just is. it is acceptable to tear your stockings open as early as you like, even before sunrise, but you must wait until the time between the morning church service and lunch before you open any presents under the tree. this is early enough to pacify your overly excited screeching children, but not so early that the glass of champagne in your hand makes you look as if you have a serious problem.

Style | etiquette

if you’re very posh, the ideal time is to wait until after lunch. this, however, also requires you to have children with self-control, which very few of us have. if this is terrible news to you, know that it could be worse. the spanishopen their presents on the morning of January 6th – try explaining that to a screaming toddler. When spending Christmas with another family, you must take your cue from them and go by the law of whomever’s house it is. this, as we have all experienced, can be rather agonising. especially if you are with a family as boring as bat sh*t and wait for everyone to open a present individually followed by a thank-you speech. Which brings me to my next point, how on earth do you say thank you to a floral-covered shower cap, or something just as detestable?

Four things to say when you don’t like your present: 1. “Oh that’s lovely, how generous,” and smile. 2. “this is too much! you really shouldn’t have… you shouldn’t have...” 3. “i just love useful presents. they are the best.” 4. “how fun!”

And, if you do? “thank you!”
